Al Golden announced Jacory Harris would be the starting quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes for their September 17 game versus Ohio State. Needless to say, Hurricanes’ fans had mixed feelings about this decision. Some felt like Stephen Morris showed enough in the Maryland game to remain the starter. Others felt like the only reason Morris started was because Jacory Harris was suspended.
We went to 3 popular Miami Hurricane blogs (CaneSport, Inside The U and Eye Of The Hurricane) to take the pulse of the fans. Here’s some of what was said:
The frustrating thing is that I expect Jacory to look better, and not because he’s a superior QB than Morris, but because he’ll have the advantage of playing with more tools in the toolbox than Morris had at his disposal last week against the Terps. Jacory is going to have Benjamin back on the outside, which is huge. He’ll also have a more complete defense to help bail him out than Morris had last week when we were without five starters.
Maryland didn’t feel much different to me, the feeling I got every time Morris dropped back in that game was just about the same queasy feeling I used to get watching Jacory anyway.
We’re good for 2 picks a game with either one, I just hope we can limit turnovers from everyone else.
I don’t think it really makes a huge difference which QB plays to be honest. There is no rational expectation of either one to be a top tier passer by any means. I just don’t know how an incoming coach watches tape on Harris and has an itch to put him on the field that badly.
I will take whichever one the coaches take, if Harris looked good(and from a lot of talk he did) then I’ll stick with Jacory until he decides to be last years Jacory.
Honestly, if it were ME, I’d probably play them both against Ohio State. Maybe not go Spurrier-style and rotate every series or every down, but I’d get them both some snaps early and then ride whoever seemed to have the hot hand.
How can anyone still request to see more of Harris at this point? It is incomprehensible to me. He would likely play better in this style of offense — any QB would, but he is an absolute turnover machine. What separates Morris is the fact that he can actually stretch the field when asked to do so, something of the utmost importance in a run-run-play action type of offense.
Jacory doesn’t get hurt by teams like Maryland as much as by the sophisticated teams who apply instant pressure and disguise coverages. You can almost guarantee he’d make at least two key bonehead errors against Ohio State.
If we start Jacory we win.
If we start the interception machine known as Stephen Morris we lose. You know the guy who has lost his last 3 starts? Yeah that guy shouldn’t play.
I guess the competition leading up to Maryland wasn’t nearly as close as Golden had led us to believe. He was likely building up Morris’ confidence heading into the game, but seeing as they haven’t even practiced yet and he’s already been replaced, either Harris won the competition in the fall and Golden didn’t want to say because of the suspension or Morris made a lot of mistakes we didn’t even see that disappointed Fisch and Golden.
Morris should not even be at Miami, he should be at like S. Florida or FCU or something, one of R. Shannons bust ass players.
For those wondering why Jacory Harris is back at #1 – Morris can make all the throws but still has mental lapses, and JH is much improved.
I’d lean toward Jacory starting but a little surprised he’s listed as #1 so quickly. i guess the coaches don’t want to waste any time and get ready for them Buckeyes. should be good.
I like Morris. But i was disappointed in his inability to manage the game and the offense properly.
If you have 2 QB’s you have none
The OC wasn’t Jaflimsy’s problem and it’s not Morris’ either
One cares more about being socially recognized and the other doesn’t have the experience or a quality leader at his position to show him the ropes.
I’m just kinda wondering why Jacory didnt smoke Morris in the spring and leave no doubt who the starter should be. More of an indictment on him than anything.
I still have ZERO faith in J12, but you know what, it’s now his time to prove otherwise….. J12 did EARN this and I can’t fault him for that. I – as should others – need to give him the CHANCE to earn back trust/respect (though not an ounce until he deserves it). After all he trots out there like the other 85 with the U on the side of his helmet.
Kinda like arguing over whom dropped the biggest deuce this morning! It’s still shyte!
